gap Connah's Quay won the big Huws Gray Alliance title showdown at a sunny Deeside Stadium. With over 500 supporters in place the big match atmosphere produced a quality showdown between two sides who would both grace the Welsh Premier League.
Rhyl were quickly into their stride prompted by man of the match Mooney in midfield. A series of powerful attacks and deep crosses gave Nomads young keeper John Rushton a challenge he passed by handling imacuatly. On the break Gary O'Toole riggled free to beat Mackin but not the post . A tough physical encounter between two well marshalled sides developed with Rhyl having the edge in terms of possession and Rushton forced into one good save by Forbes. On 29 minutes one over eager challenge saw referee Petch, who had a flawless game, award Rhyl a free kick twenty five yards out. For a second successive week Rushton could only watch as an exorcet of a strike beat the wall and smashed inside the top corner. Ryan Williams simply couldnt have hit it better.Rhyl were rampant and Nomads just couldnt gain much possession. Then on 38 minutes came the game changing momment. Ricky Evans was nearer the half way line than the penalty area when he gained possession of a loose ball. He saw Mackin slightly off his line and chipped with crispness over the keeper and into goal. A truly magnificent effort. Nomads hesitency was gone and did not return , we had a game.
As the hosts began to get hold of the ball more and more Rhyl were less of a force. An even second half saw both sides cancell each other out with careful defending and forceful midfield battling. Mooney drove Rhyl onward but their play became longer and longer . Nomads ,inspired by Evans , got the ball onto the ground and played the short passing game that got them to the top. Mackin made a good stop from O'Toole and did well to stop a close range McGregor effort. Mooney drew a stinging save from Rushton before Nomads gained a 75th minute lead. Evans whipped outswinging corner was met by Danny Forde. His downward header gave the defenders on the line no chance. Nuetrals expected a Rhyl fightback, but Nomads closed down , kept possession and worked tirelessly. the games final chance saw O'Toole break free , draw out Mackin but slide his shot across the keeper and inches wide.
A good strong match , shaded by the victors, and a great advert for Alliance Football. After the game Nomads officials were full of praise for Rhyl football club who took the painful defeat with dignity and grace.
